Curriculum

Our curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum (2014) and as part of this we cover a number of compulsory subjects, which are then enhanced with a range of additional opportunities such as our Forest School.

Compulsory National Curriculum subjects are:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Design and technology
  • Computing
  • History
  • Geography
  • Art and Design
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Modern Foreign Language (Spanish is taught throughout KS2)

We also cover Religious Education, along with Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (PSCHE). At any given time the children will be studying either a History, Geography or Science Topic.

The curriculum design and delivery takes into account the organisation’s duties under the Equalities Act 2010 and the SEND Regulations 2014.

See more subject information on our Curriculum Subjects page.

English and Maths

All children take part in daily English and Maths lessons. In addition, the rehearsal and application of basic skills learned in the core curriculum are incorporated into other subjects. Children begin to read and write by following a phonic programme called ‘Read Write Inc.’

Throughout the school children read books from a number of schemes such as ‘Oxford Reading Tree.’ However, as soon as possible, we like children to be reading books that are not part of a scheme. All of the children’s reading books are colour coded and children choose books from the colour band most suitable for their ability.

As pupils progress through the academy, they will be encouraged to do work at home in order to consolidate work done in school. In particular from the Nursery onwards your child will be encouraged to bring reading books home to share with you. Parents are requested to help us to develop the children’s reading by completing a home/school reading record.

Two lessons per week are allocated for PE per KS2 class. In KS1, there is one timetabled lesson, in addition to Be Active and Daily Mile initiatives. The academy also offers a number of after school clubs where pupils can participate in different sporting activities and take part in inter school competitions and events

Our curriculum is underpinned by the National Curriculum, which sets out the programmes of study which our pupils cover in their classes. However, when we talk about successful Akroydon pupils, we aim to develop each child’s special skills, talents and interests – including the provision of an appropriate educational programme for all pupils with special educational needs.

Pupils are encouraged to participate in sports activities and to come along to other organised events such as school performances, Family Dining events and theatre visits. We are keen to include parents and carers on these occasions, and there are many opportunities to get involved.

Pupils are also given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of after-school clubs which run for an hour at the end of school each day. After-school clubs include keyboard and guitar lessons, multi-sports, martial arts and fashion and design.
